The Bilingual Education Student Outreach Society

An honor society for aspiring bilingual educators

AN EXTENSION OF B.E.S.O.

EST. SPRING 2018

The Texas A&M Chapter of B.E.S.O. is excited and honored to announce that it will be the first ever, pioneer university to establish an honor society specifically created for bilingual educators! There are over 18 chapters of B.E.S.O. in the state of Texas alone, and to be the initiator of a program that will help to further empower aspiring bilingual educators fills us with great pride and gives us a joy beyond measure! Not too long ago, speaking another language other than English in schools was seen as a deficit to a child's education that needed to be fixed. Through the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, exemplary in the efforts of student walkouts, we began to slowly decrease the discrepancy in the academic quality of the education of Latino students in comparison to their non-Hispanic counterparts. A greater acceptance of bilingualism began to take form, and today, we are proud to call speaking an additional language an asset as opposed to a drawback. For this precise reason, we think that bilingual education is something that should be considered a gift and an honor, which is where the inspiration for creating an honor society derived from. In today's world, speaking English is a standard necessity, but speaking Spanish along with that is a golden ticket. By the year 2050, Hispanics will contribute to the numerical majority of the United States, and it is becoming all-the-more essential that we promote a language skill that will only continue to increase in its usefulness. Bilingual Students have advantages, not only in literacy development but also in problem-solving skills and other areas of cognition, making it an empowering tool for a child's potential and opportunities.

As stated in an archive of the U.S. Department of Education, "what we see now is that bilingualism is a gift that we can give to our students and to our communities. And that is a powerful shift in our historical perspective on bilingualism."
